CAN has been partnering with Mitchell Elementary since 2014 to implement a range of programs and services. At this location, CAN currently operates an After School Program, the CAN Art & Design program, and an emergency food pantry for Mitchell, Scarlett, Pittsfield, and Carpenter families and teachers. CAN also hosts the Homework Diner, which invites families, teachers, and CAN staff to spend quality time together over a delicious meal and fun, academic-based activity stations!

In light of COVID-19, CAN will not be operating its regular programs out of Mitchell Elementary in Fall 2020.

Educating Children & Youth

  • Free After School Program that provides homework & reading support, enrichment activities, social-emotional development, snack, and more

  • CAN Art & Design program in which students develop creative skillsets to inquire, design, build, and connect with their broader community


  • School-Family Liaison Services

stabilizing Families

  • Emergency food pantry (available to all Mitchell, Scarlett, Pittsfield, and Carpenter families & teachers)

  • Holiday gift support (for select families)

  • Referrals to additional Washtenaw County resources

  • Free food is provided to the children & youth attending Mitchell's After School and CAN Art & Design programs

Building Community

  • CAN hosts regular holiday and community parties/events during the Mtichell After School Program

  • Relationship-building between teachers, CAN staff, and CAN families

  • CAN staff is present in the school building during the day to assist families with finding resources and connecting with Mitchell's educators

  • Every semester, CAN partners with families and Mitchell staff to throw the bi-annual Homework Diner, in which everyone shares a delicious meal and participates in activities showcasing what CAN's children and youth accomplish in Mitchell's After School Program & CAN Art & Design
