Read to Succeed Volunteer
Read to Succeed Volunteers assist Brick Elementary School teachers for 1-2 hours a week during the school day with literacy-based activities.
Read to Succeed Volunteers will assist the classroom teacher with a variety of literacy-based activities, which might include:
Reading with students (aloud to large group, aloud with small group, with a student one-on-one)
Practicing sight word memorization & play sight word games
Partnering with students through the writing process, or
Helping students practice and understand the components of storytelling
Literacy development is not limited to a Language Arts, Reading, or Writing block, but can also be practiced in Science with non-fiction literature or Math with story problems, for example, as both still require skills like comprehension and making predictions which are necessary for being able to be a successful adult.
Volunteers can choose any 1-2 hour block between 9am-3pm, Monday-Friday that fits their schedule, and the CAN Director of Volunteers will match them with a teacher who is available to host the volunteer at the time he or she is available.
Volunteers must be at least 16 years old, complete a volunteer application, background check (if 18+), and the “Read to Succeed Volunteer” online training. Experience with children and youth is preferred, but all interests and educational backgrounds are welcome.
To have time to build meaningful connections with CAN's children and youth, volunteers should commit to volunteer for 12 hours minimum (or about 2 hours a week for 6 weeks).
